Hang on, why is Honda making two slightly different versions of the same car?

Honda has unveiled its new ‘GT’ in China, and clearly it couldn’t make its mind up on the final styling touches

It’s important to compromise in life. You know, sometimes you just need to make small concessions in order to get things done. That is unless you work in Honda’s Chinese design department, it seems.

Because instead of just agreeing on one single look for its newest EV, Honda has decided to make two slightly different versions of the saloon/hatchback thing using the names of two of its joint ventures.

We’re not making this up. What you see above is the GAC Honda GT in the red corner, and the Dongfeng Honda GT in the blue corner.

As far as we can tell these two will both be built in the same factory in China, with Honda saying “the designs reflect the respective style and image each model strives to create”. We’re told the red GAC “expresses a seamless, sophisticated and smart sense of the future” with its black bonnet and sporty front bumper, while the Dongfeng “expresses an emotional sense of the future that stimulates people who see the vehicle”. Clear as mud, right? Heck, they’ve even got the same wheels. We’re liking the Dongfeng GT’s Lambo Revuelto-style lights though.

Looks like the interiors will be identical too, with a large central infotainment screen, a second portrait screen by the drive selector, a dial display screen behind the steering wheel, a passenger screen with a ‘far-focus display’ and two screens to beam in a feed from the wingmirror cameras. Yep, that’s a lot of screen action.

There’s no word on powertrains just yet, but we’re told this pair will be the flagship models of Honda’s ‘Ye Series’ in China. Oh, and the carmaker also says it’ll use local tech in its cars for China, with Momenta looking after the AI advanced driver assistance tech and DeepSeek deploying more AI in the infotainment system.

Given the choice, would you go Dongfeng or GAC, folks?
