Hamilton and Rosberg modify the SL63

Published: 01 Dec 2014

Mercedes has marked its rather successful year in F1 with a special edition SL63 AMG.

Its most powerful roadster has been given two different cosmetic makeovers, each with influence from one of its key drivers, apparently. How they've found the time since last weekend's celebrations is beyond us.

Both dubbed the ‘SL63 AMG World Championship 2014 Collector's Edition' (deep breath), Lewis Hamilton's car is black with gold touches, Nico Rosberg's white with silver accents.

While the SL's exteriors differ from standard, it's inside where the cars feel most... unique, a pair of black quilted leather sports seats pointing towards distinctly unsubtle dashboard styling.

There will be 19 SL63 AMG Collector's Editions produced, signifying the number of races on this year's calendar. And the two cars we've seen so far celebrate two of these: Hamilton's car gets gold styling flourishes aplenty with the Silverstone track layout daubed in various places, not least the footwell carpets. He took victory at his home race, don't forget.

Rosberg's car, on the other hand, celebrates his home victory at Germany's Hockenheimring. Quite how Spa, Montreal and the Hungaroring are signified - the three races where Daniel Ricciardo denied Mercedes drivers the top of the podium - remains to be seen...

Underneath all the chintz, these SL63 AMGs are standard. When ‘standard' means a 530bhp twin-turbo V8 that grenades the rear tyres on a whim, though, that's fine by us. Something Lewis was only too happy to demonstrate, as you'll see above. He's still willing and able to do a burnout, then. Good lad.

The cars made their debut this past weekend at Mercedes' ‘Stars and Cars' event, held at its Stuttgart home, with 50,000 fans turning up to help celebrate Merc's - and Hamilton's - big wins in F1 this year.

There were demonstration runs by all manner of motorsport Mercs, as you'll see in the gallery above. And Hamilton was unsurprisingly jubilant:

"The atmosphere was fantastic and a fitting conclusion to this incredible season," he said, between gratuitous tyre-smoking. "I never thought in a million years that I would receive such support. Winning this title was the best moment of my life..."
