The Ford Mondeo has returned! China-only 2022 saloon revealed

Yes, that is a brand-new 2022 Ford Mondeo, and no, you can’t have it. Not unless you’re in China, in which case, Nǐ hǎo.

Ford doesn’t sell the Mondeo over here anymore of course because of SUV-shaped reasons, but since it launched in China back in 2002, we’re told it has “built a reputation with local consumers as a stylish and sporty mid-sized sedan”. You get what you pay for, huh Britain.

So, this handsome looking lump will launch later this year, featuring a design that draws inspiration from Ford’s “rich heritage”, and one that aims to be ‘commanding, agile and responsive’.

It’s got an almost coupe-like silhouette, and there’s much talk of accelerated bonnet lines and speedy shoulders and so forth. Bottom line, it looks really good. Modern, but still infused with the shape of the car we used to buy by the truckload.

It’s apparently a smidge wider and longer than the previous generation Chinese Mondeo, allowing for more space for passengers. The lights ‘animate’ upon approach; the door handles sit flush; the Ford badge is touch-sensitive; there is “iconic Ford performance DNA” buried in the design all over.

What’s not been revealed is what powers said performance, though reports suggest either a 1.5-litre or 2.0-litre petrol engine underneath.

“To design the next generation of a well-known nameplate such as Mondeo was a privilege and a challenge for our team,” said Maurizio Tocco, Ford’s chief designer. “We wanted to respect and acknowledge the history which had come before us while elevating the customers’ experience to the next level.”
