Entry-level Tesla Model S revealed
Here is a car that boasts over 300bhp, a 0-60mph time of just 5.2 seconds, and a top speed of 140mph. Welcome to the ‘entry-level' Tesla Model S 70D. And yes, it's all-electric.
The 70D replaces the 60S, and, as the name suggests, benefits from a 70kWh battery pack, which Tesla claims is good for a quoted range of 240 miles (at 65mph, mind).
The 70D gets permanent four-wheel-drive too, thanks to an electric motor on each axle, and there's the usual gamut of Stuff to contend with: keyless entry, LED daytime running lights, an eight-year, infinite-mile battery and drive warranty, lane departure warning, and auto emergency braking.
You can, of course, go wild with the options - the list includes features such as air suspension, lane-keeping, traffic-aware cruise control and even rear facing seats - but that pushes into the next model up, which is faster. And therefore better. Spend even more and you're into the Model S P85D territory (0-60mph in 3.1s, 691bhp drivetrain)...
Prices for this 70D start from £54,500, with the UK government grant applied. Which is within a whisker of the cost of a BMW M3...
