BMW’s latest Art Car is an i5 M60 xDrive which references the world’s wetlands
Dreamt up by Swedish artist Katrin Westman, this is a gorgeous collision of blue, purple and red atop a Mineral White canvas
BMW is no stranger to collaborating with designers to produce some funky (and occasionally weird) Art Cars, with the lineage stretching as far back as 1975. Notable examples include Alexander Calder’s 3.0 CSL and Andy Warhol’s Group 4 M1.
And now you can add a second i5 to that list, following on from the colour-changing one shown back in March. This new 5er is based on an M60 xDrive saloon and serves as the blank canvas for Swedish artist Katrin Westman to display her way with brush strokes.
Using what appears to be a Mineral White paint - which is offered for free and doesn’t form part of the expensive optional finishes - Westman has applied various blue, purple and red tones. It’s inspired by Baroque, a style popularised in the 17th century. Apparently.
The theme is called ‘Wetland’, with no more detail added. So, we're going out on a limb to suggest it presumably takes after Martin Mere in Lancashire, the Insh Marshes in the Scottish highlands, or your very own garden once Storm Sandy was finished with it. Regardless, it does look stunning.
The i5 will be used to ferry guests to and from this year’s Market Art Fair in Stockholm next month, before (likely) retiring to the catacombs where the rest of BMW’s Art Cars seek refuge.
Johanna Kriisa, BMW Sweden boss, said: “Combining art and mobility has always been a passion for BMW. The collaboration with Market Art Fair gives us a unique opportunity to support young Nordic artists while emphasising our commitment to art and culture.”
