BMW has mildly updated the electric i4 and 4 Series Gran Coupe

And we do mean mild: new grille, new lights and a bit of a tidy-up inside

Published: 24 Apr 2024

Be still thine beating hearts: BMW has given its electric i4 and 4 Series Gran Coupé a bit of a mild update. And by mild, we mean: a marginally tweaked grille, some fancy new headlights and a few new cabin features.

First, the outside. The i4 gets slimmer new headlights with cool blue in-lays, a new set of two-tone double-spoke light-alloys and a revised kidney grille, with finishes in matt chrome or high-gloss black depending on how you're speccing it.

The updated colour palette also includes this addition of this rather striking green (see images above) and a metallic red. The i4 M50 variant - the best-selling BMW M car of 2023, believe it or not - also gets new M-specific wing mirror caps. Woohoo!

The same changes transfer over to the 4er GC, which gets a marginally wider exhaust that can be trimmed in high-gloss black upon request. BMW has introduced its 'Laserlight' tail lights as an optional extra to both models. Apparently these posh lights project up to half a mile behind, but fear not: BMW says they’re "more pleasant to the eye".

Inside, there's a new flat-bottomed steering wheel, illuminated air vents, and comfier (albeit optional) leather seats, while M Sport models get some nice aluminium interior trim.

BMW has integrated the latest version of its iDrive into both cars, along with an update to its cloud-based sat nav. There's a flatter menu structure too, we're told the filters are easier to use, and via the My BMW app, i4 drivers can let the system know how much range to arrive at their destination with.

Powertrains haven't changed, so the cars you'll likely be interested in are the 369bhp straight-six turbo in the 4 GC, and the 537bhp twin-motor setup of the i4 M50. This latter car is a quick one, able to hit 62mph in just 3.9s.

Prices for the 4 Series Gran Coupé start at £43,830, while the new i4 starts from £50,365.
