This is an Alfa Giulia you might actually buy

Alfa Romeo finally unveils cooking Giulias. Still gorgeous, luckily

Published: 01 Mar 2016

Alfa has been showing-off its 3-series-sized Giulia for what feels like years, but only in 503bhp Quadrifoglio spec, with the big wheels, swollen arches and quad exhausts. In other words, in a spec very few people can actually afford. So, at today’s Geneva Motor Show it revealed a Giulia you might actually buy - with a diesel and everything. And we’re pleased to report it still looks rather gorgeous.

Geneva marks the first time the Giulia range has been revealed in its entirety. When it goes on sale in September - 2023, it feels like - there will be three engines to choose from. Besides the 2.9-litre V6 of the Quadrifoglio, there’s a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol with 197bhp and a 2.0-litre diesel with either 148 or 178bhp. Predictably, Alfa is promising exceptional refinement, efficiency and performance across the board. We’ll see for ourselves soon enough.

It’s also quite light. The doors, wings, engines and bits of the braking and suspension systems are all made of aluminium, and the driveshaft is carbon fibre. The quick one takes things even further, with a carbon bonnet, carbon roof, carbon spoilers and splitters and ceramic discs. The weight-split of all versions is 50/50 (it is rear-drive, remember). Alfa also seems especially proud of the Giulia’s suspension and steering setup, with a double wishbone up front and a four-arm layout for the rear axle.

There is also much technology, particularly in the Quadrifoglio. Torque vectoring, some kind of new braking system that uses a traditional servo alongside the stability control to apparently improve responses, plus everything gets all the normal collision warning, pedestrian detecting, autonomous braking kit you could ever need. Qs also get an enhanced version of the Alfa DNA controller and an active aero splitter.

Would you have one of these over a 320d or C-Class?
