The first Lexus LC500 Convertible cost someone $2m

…for just $1m more the buyer could have had the first C8 Corvette

Published: 21 Jan 2020

You might have caught the news that the very first mid-engined C8 Corvette recently sold for the rather hefty sum of $3million. The 'Vette crossed the block for charity at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction, though it wasn’t the only first-edition to make an appearance.

The lovely blue Lexus LC500 Convertible you see above, complete with VIN #001, was also sold for a good cause. Well, two good causes in fact, because every penny (or cent) of the fee was to be split between the Boys & Girls Clubs of America charity (which creates after-school programmes for kids across America) and the Bob Woodruff Foundation (supporting veterans, service members and families affected by 9/11).

The standard LC500 Convertible will sell for around $100,000 in the US of A, so the lady or gentleman that placed the winning $2million bid must have been feeling very generous. Yep, two million dollars. That’s around £1.5million to save you Googling the exchange rate.

The drop-top LC500 is quite a lovely looking thing, of course, and it features that 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V8 with 471bhp, but this one also comes with unique blue calipers and that first-edition carbon fibre sill plate. Oh, and let’s not forget the matching luggage set, production line photos and one-of-one certificate signed by the LC500’s chief engineers.

Would that be enough to justify splashing $2m on an LC? Maybe the new owner was just desperate to hear that V8 breathe? Whoever you are – TG salutes you.
