Fancy an abandoned 'barn find' Merc?

Following yesterday's woe about that sandy Enzo, here's a chance at restitution

  • First, an apology. Yesterday we ran a story about a Ferrari Enzo that had been left to rot in the stifling desert heat of Dubai. The poor Enzo was riddled with sand and seemingly left for dead; a shame for such a rare and superlative supercar.

We were swamped with literally quite a few emails along the lines of ‘I can't believe it', and ‘give it to me', and ‘I'll take it off their hands and restore it', and ‘just give it to me and I'll fix it'.

We're keen to settle the cosmic imbalance this story has caused. We want to put something positive back into the universe, and this Mercedes is a step in the right direction. It is a disused, ‘barn-find' Mercedes 600 Pullman Limousine, and it is being offered up for auction at the annual London auction held by RM.

And when we mean ‘barn-find', we mean proper ‘barn-find': it is need of a full bonnet-to-bumper restoration.

  • When new, it boasted 300bhp from its 6.3-litre V8 engine. And as you can quite clearly see, it's not new anymore. Many horses have probably executed a daredevil escape from the big Vee-Eight.

Still, that engine benefits from aluminium cylinder heads and Bosch fuel injection (might want to give it a scrub), and is married to a four-speed auto ‘box. And because it's a big, plush Mercedes, hydraulics play a key part in the suspension, brakes, seats, boot, sunroof, windows and even opening the ruddy doors.

Ignoring the fact the 600 Pullman offered here is sans headlights and, well, knackered, when polished, it remains one of the world's coolest cars. It's got seven seats, and previous patrons of the Merc 600 Benz include Elvis, Jay Kay, George Harrison, Jack Nicholson, Coco Chanel, and Rowan Atkinson.

  • Now you, Top-so-called-Gearer, can bid on this shoddy, beaten-down and abandoned Mercedes, and restore it to its former glory. It's estimated to go for around £30,000. You'd probably need a lot more to fix it, too.
