Everything you need to know about cars this week: 24 Feb '19

A widebody Lexus LC, a brand new Fast Ford, and all this year's F1 cars

  • BMW i3S review: 182bhp electric car hits Britain

"Upgrading your i3 to an i3S costs around £2,500 and brings inch-bigger 20in wheels, another 14bhp (for a 182bhp total) to knock 0.4secs off the 0-62mph time (now 6.9secs), 10mm-lower suspension and a 40mm-wider track, which also means extended wheel arches."

  • Overfinch has attacked the Range Rover Velar

"You’ll no doubt be well aware of British tuners Overfinch. The company makes its living adding big body kits and wheels, as well as occasionally big power, to Range Rovers and the Land Rover Defender. So, here is its almost inevitable crack at the middle-child of the Range Rover line-up (at least in size) – the Velar."

  • Fast 4x4s twin test: Cupra Ateca vs Skoda Kodiaq vRS

"Here we are then. It wasn’t me, and it probably wasn’t you either, but the critical mass behind tall hatchbacks has now spawned fast ones. The hot hatch SUV. We asked for this."

  • The new Ford Focus ST has more torque than a Type R

"Believe it or not, this is the fourth generation of Ford Focus ST. Rivals with that sort of lineage were inducted into the hot hatchback hall of fame long ago, and yet it’s safe to say the ST’s still a long way from icon status."

  • Citroen's Ami One could be your modern day 2CV

"In its 100 years, Citroen has come up with some of the most brilliant and inventive cars ever. So, for the first of two concepts it’ll show to celebrate that centenary, the company is trying to channel its forward-looking spirit."

  • F1 2019: check out the full grid for this year

"Internet, say hello to the Formula 1 grid of 2019. Although if somebody told us that last year’s cars had all just driven through a paint factory we’d struggle to prove them wrong."

  • This widebody Lexus LC is like a road legal Super GT car

"This, girls and boys, is a wide-bodied Lexus LC. A car that could well tear the internet in two. On the one hand, we have a beautifully clean sports car that’s had its aggression cranked right up, arguably in bad taste. On the other, we have a ludicrously punchy piece of design with more than a whiff of LFA about it. Spoiler-clad Nürburgring Pack in particular."

  • Why Honda's Swindon closure isn't simply down to Brexit

"The proposed shut-down of the Honda plant in Swindon will be a tragedy for the families of 3,500 workers. So too for the multiples of other people in the town and elsewhere that manufacture parts of the cars."

  • Here’s your first look at Aston Martin’s mid-engined hypercar

"Aston Martin is going to build a mid-engined supercar and, if you squint a bit, deploy some imagination and maybe turn up the brightness on your screen, this is it."

  • Review: McLaren 600LT Spider

"The 600LT was one of our favourite supercars of last year. Now there’s a roadster. One for the boulevard?"

  • New vs Used: Jeep Wrangler vs Mercedes G-Class

"Let’s say you have between £40,000 and £50,000 burning a hole in one of your camouflaged trousers’ many pockets. You want to go as far off-road as is humanly possible, so a conventional SUV just won’t do. But you still need to run errands, take the kids to school and so-on. A Land Rover Defender is too utilitarian, so you don’t want one of those. This thing has to do double-duty - you want some mod-cons, and fewer sharp edges."

  • Yikes, Peugeot Sport has made a 400bhp hybrid 508

  • Dirt Rally 2.0 review: Dirt series hits new heights

"In all honesty, it really doesn’t matter what you choose to drive or where, though. Whether it’s a boat-like 60s Citroen DS21 in coastal New Zealand or a laughably overpowered Aston V8 Vantage RGT on the fast tarmac of Spain, Dirt Rally 2.0 is guaranteed make you feel like a rally hero with an utterly unpronounceable Finnish surname."

  • TG drag races: Alfa Stelvio QV vs Mercedes-AMG GLC 63

"AMG vs Alfa Romeo, a truly evocative pair of names doing battle and with over 1,000bhp between them. It just so happens they’re both 4x4 family cars, too. Stelvio Quadrifoglio takes on GLC 63 S."
