Is this VW’s new GTI badge for the electric age?
VW trademarks lightning bolt design, suggesting GTIs will be around for a while yet
What’s this then? Volkswagen has apparently trademarked an all-new GTI logo, and it makes it fairly plain - albeit in a rather crude way - that VW’s thinking about what the performance moniker will look like when everything’s gone electric. Interesting.
Until now VW’s ‘hot’ EVs - basically just the ID.4 and ID.5 at the moment - have been badged as GTXs, leading to fears that the whole idea of a GTI would fade away into the history books with the arrival of the petrol and diesel car ban in 2030.
Not so, judging by this nugget unearthed by CarBuzz. We found out back in March that Volkswagen is working on a GTI/GTX hot hatch version of the ID.2all, so maybe it's for that? Or some sort of concept? The Munich motor show is only a month away…
Of course it could be a false trail. Who remembers the Voltswagen fiasco of 2021?
The trademark was filed last week on 25 July, although the document filed with the authorities in Germany gives no hints as to how it’d be used. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
