Volkswagen’s new electric car ‘for everyone’ will cost less than £22k

VW set to reveal ‘ID.2all’ concept that previews a cheaper EV

Published: 15 Mar 2023

Volkswagen is planning on releasing ten new electric cars between now and 2026, and one of them will cost less than £22,000 (€25,000).

It will be previewed by a concept called the VW ‘ID.2all’, indicating this car’s place as the compact electric car for the masses. Like what the Golf did – and has done successfully – for combustion-engined compact hatches.

Details are thin ahead of the ID.2all concept’s unveil, but VW has already confirmed a proper entry-level ‘ID.1’ that’ll sit on the group’s new MEB Small electric car platform. That’ll spin off stuff like the Cupra Urban Rebel too, so this ID.2all will likely share that base.

In the Cupra concept – itself scheduled for a 2025 launch date – we know that battery and e-motor setup is good for 223bhp and a 0-62mph time of just 6.9s. A long range version of that car is able to stretch to 273 miles.

“With the ID.2all study in the compact car segment, Volkswagen today provides a hands-on preview of the first electric VW for everyone,” VW said today. “The starting price is to be under €25,000.

“Electric vehicles will then be available in almost every volume segment, and the Volkswagen brand will offer the broadest e-portfolio compared with the competition, from the entry-level BEV to the ID.7 electric sedan.”

It’s an ambitious plan that’ll see the rollout of the second-generation ID.3, ID.3 GTX, long-wheelbase Buzz and the aforementioned flagship electric car dubbed ID.7, among others. Plus, VW is investing €460m to transform its Wolfsburg plant in preparation.
