The Volkswagen ID.4 just got a whole lot cheaper

Smaller battery and less powerful motor means ID.4 now starts from £32k

Published: 13 May 2021

When the Volkswagen ID.4 came out it was only available in £40k ‘1st Edition’ spec (pictured), but since then VW has been steadily adding more models to the line-up. With the release of the new City and Style entry-level versions there are now no fewer than EIGHT different types of ID.4 to choose from. And the very cheapest one is eligible for the Government’s £2,500 Plug-in Car Grant.

City and Style ID.4s get a 52kWh battery for up to 213 miles of range. You can either have a ‘Pure’ or ‘Pure Performance’ electric motor – the former has 146bhp and 162lb ft and the latter 168bhp and 229lb ft. The Pure takes a quite slow 10.9 seconds to hit 62mph, while the Pure Performance does it in 9 seconds flat. Both have a top speed of 99mph.

The City-spec ID.4 with the Pure motor is the one that’s eligible for the Government’s Plug-in Car Grant. At £32,150 it’s just under £4,000 cheaper than the next cheapest ID.4 (the City Pure Performance), and about £155 more expensive than the cheapest Skoda Enyaq. Said Enyaq has a bigger 58kWh battery, claims 256 miles of range to the ID.4’s 213 and does 0-62mph in 8.7 seconds. You’d have to really want the VW…

The ID.4 City gets LED lights, a 10-inch infotainment system, adaptive cruise control, parking sensors and traffic-sign recognition among other things. No alloy wheels, mind. They’re extra. The ID.4 Style, which starts at £38,150, gets alloys as well as ‘matrix’ LED lights, three-zone climate, keyless entry & go and a rear-view camera.
