The Vanwall Vandervell is an all-electric 650bhp hyper-hatch

Storied F1 name applied to EV hot hatch that'll cost more than £110k. Who’s interested? Anyone?

Published: 14 Nov 2023

The Vanwall Vandervell - a 650bhp, all-electric hyper-hatch - will go on sale in 2024 with a quoted starting price of around £110,000. And that's before VAT. Yup, old name meets modern madness.

If that name rings a bell it's probably because Vanwall won the very first F1 constructors' championship way back when in 1958, shortly before falling off the face of the earth. It's recently been revived by what used to be known as the ByKolles Racing team, hence why a Vanwall Hypercar lined up at Le Mans this year.

Anyway, it's now heading into the production car game with this EV hot hatch, borrowing its tongue-twisting name from original founder Tony Vandervell.

Two versions will be available from launch: the entry-level 350bhp ‘S’ and a spunkier ‘S Plus’ that’s limited to 500 units and has 650bhp. Both will be equipped with four-wheel drive and include dedicated launch control and regenerative braking systems.

Vanwall has also quoted a weight of around 1,800kg... the hot hatches of old will be furious.

In terms of styling, Vandervell has taken a retro approach with the front end using straight, geometric lines to give it an old-school look. The bonnet also has two side under-cuts that lean into the arches, while the design (claims Vanwall) also helps the body flow nicely onto the low-profile tyres that wrap around a set of 21 or 22in alloys.

Towards the rear of the car, the Vandervell uses slender, dynamic grooves along its body to channel air towards the car’s integrated deflector. The throwback styling certainly helps it stand out from stuff like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and MG4 XPower, but then the six-figure price tag does a good job of that already.

Available in a range of six colours from launch (check 'em out above) - including Vanwell Racing Green - the Vandervell hyper-hatch will be on sale from the first quarter of 2024. Any takers out there? Please make yourself known below...
