The slippery new Hyundai Ioniq 6 will get over 379 miles of range

Confirmation that South Korea’s radical new streamliner will go quite far indeed

Hyundai has today confirmed the big battery version of its radical new Ioniq 6 will be able to travel more than 379 miles on a single charge – a few miles more than what Tesla quotes for a Model 3 Long Range (374 miles).

That big battery is a 77.4kWh unit available in either rear- or all-wheel-drive versions. The former will likely be the longest range iteration, while the latter option deploys a dual motor setup producing 320bhp, 446lb ft of torque and the ability to go from 0-62mph in 5.1s.

The smaller battery – a 53kWh option – is said to consume less than 14kWh/100km when in a rear-wheel-drive config with 18in wheels. That’s 4.4 miles per kWh for our UK-based efficiency fans.

The Ioniq 6, boasting a drag coefficient of 0.21, sits on the company’s E-GMP architecture that underpins other stuff like the Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60, with both 400V and 800V charging. You can also use the 6 to charge up other things via the vehicle-to-load function.

To give you some idea of size the Ioniq 6 is only fractionally longer than a Tesla Model 3, but shares that car’s height and width. The wheelbase measures just over 2.9m long, putting it just shy of a Range Rover’s.

While UK spec (and pricing) has yet to be confirmed, features on the new 6 include lane-centring cruise control (dubbed ‘Highway Driving Assist 2), regular cruise control, collision avoidance, high-beam and speed limit assists, driver attention warnings and even a ‘safe exit warning’ for backseat passengers. Pretty self-explanatory, that one, and useful too.

“The Ioniq 6 electrified streamliner will provide a unique and distinctive experience for drivers and passengers, optimised in every way to redefine electric mobility,” said Hyundai boss Jaehoon Chang.
