Project Ronin is Fisker’s new four-door electric convertible

Ronin is essentially an extended, world-class car chase scene with some hokum about special ops personnel and a briefcase tacked on to qualify it as a film. A fine place to start then, for Henrik Fisker’s new product.

Meet Project Ronin: the third car to emerge from Fisker Automotive (after the Ocean SUV and Pear city car) codenamed after Frankenheimer’s 1998 stone-cold classic. It’s a fully electric four-door convertible, built with “long road trips” for four human adults and their luggage in mind.

Indeed, Fisker wants Project Ronin to offer the longest range of a production electric car when it arrives, with a projected range of 660 miles (WLTP). Fast, too, with 0-60mph ‘close to two seconds’, via an all-wheel-drive setup featuring three electric motors.

“There is no other four-door production convertible in the market,” Fisker told TopGear.com. “It’s a big challenge to create a four-door convertible as it needs a unique, innovative strong lower rocker structure to compensate for the lack of a B-pillar, to be able to sustain side impact.”

Fisker is aiming Project Ronin at luxury combustion-engined cabrios, and he reckons on capturing a large part of the segment “above $150k”.

Work on the car started last year, with a brief to “to use the most advanced, lightweight materials”. Special focus has also been given on performance and the “overall driving experience”.

We’re told it’ll bear active aero tech, and an “innovative” battery design packaged into the structure of the car. As befits an exciting new electric car, the interior will be vegan friendly, while the doors are “unique” and will offer better ingress and egress.

Expect to see it next year, with the final production car ready in 2024. Plenty of time to rewatch a bunch of 535s and 406s and a 450 SEL battle tank go at each other on the streets of Paris…
