Ooh la la! The production-ready Renault 5 has been teased for the first time
Here’s your first look at a few random bits of the new, all-electric Renault 5
Today, Renault has teased a few – by which we mean 'four' – images of the new Renault 5 E-Tech. Or should we say four close-ups of some stylish bits and coloured numbers? We love a good game of Car Parts Without Context, but...
The pictures reveal, er, not a great deal about the much-awaited model – at least, until they’re compared with these spy shots.
The newcomer takes its styling cues from the classic original 5 hot hatch. That much is certain. But aside from the distinctive back end, Turbo-inspired wheel arches and sporty yellow bodywork, the rest looks as fresh as a daisy.
Renault tells us the vertical rear lights have special aero efficiency, while the front headlights make the car instantly recognisable with a ‘human-like expression’. Get ready for TG’s next Top 9: 'Owners who look like their cars'…
The air intake has been replaced by a digital screen showing how much juice is in R5’s 52kWh battery. It should be good for almost 250 miles on a single charge, too. We already knew it was going to be a giant powerbank on wheels.
At less than four metres long, the iconic city car is based on the brand’s revised ‘AmpR small’ platform. It features multi-link suspension for more agile handling and stability. It also has a swathe of future-facing, connected tech in the cabin, including ‘Reno’, which we reckon could be Renault’s interpretation of Total Recall’s Johnny Cab.
Ambitions are riding high for the little 5 E-Tech. Fabrice Cambolive, CEO Renault, said: “Renault 5 E-Tech electric is a cult icon redesigned for the modern age. We pulled out all the stops for this engaging car, designed and built in France. With its cheerful design and new-generation technologies, it’s out to make electric vehicles more affordable in Europe.”
If you're desperate to get your order in, Renault is flogging a priority access pass for £150 that'll give superfans and impatient types the option to ‘skip the line’ for the next 10 days. Cheeky.
However, you will also get a scale model of the thing as a sweetener. So there's that. Tempted?
