Official: Mercedes will build a baby electric G-Class
The incoming king-sized electric G will get a baby brother, and Merc says it'll be fun both on and off-road...
At the end of its unveiling ceremony for the new Concept CLA Class, Mercedes chief Ola Källenius showed a blocky single-line graphic resembling the outline of a G-Wagen.
He said: "Yes, there will be a little G. We have some very big shoes to fill there. So be assured: the little G will be electric. It will be capable. It will be instantly recognisable.
"And it will be a lot of fun to drive – both on- and off-road."
But if the baby G is to be as capable as he says, it can't use the same MMA lightweight car platform that'll underpin Merc's next generation of small cars. It has a new electric van platform upcoming, which might be a better starting point.
Mercedes has already announced that a full-electric version of the king-size G is in the plan for 2024 (pictured above). It has four electric motors and the ability to use them to spin in its own length. Guaranteed to break the ice at parties.
