This is the new, more affordable Kia EV5 SUV

First came the EV6 and then the EV9. Now, Kia has unveiled the EV5, a new all-electric compact SUV, set to go into production as part of its ongoing electrification strategy. And keep reading, because we’ve also been told to expect a performance-enhanced GT version, too.

As part of its first ‘Kia EV Day’ address, there’ll be three powertrain variations for the EV5. They are standard, long-range and long-range all-wheel-drive (AWD) – at least for the Chinese and Korean markets. There’s no confirmation of what's coming to Europe or the UK just yet.

As a result, the details released cite the Chinese-tested ranges, rather than the WLTP ones we’re used to. The standard EV5 comes with a 64kWh battery capable of 329 miles and fast-charging from 30 per cent to 80 per cent in 27 minutes.

The long-range version couples an 81kWh battery with the same front-axle 160kW motor. Meanwhile, the AWD version adds a 70kW motor to the rear axle, creating a maximum output of 225kW and0 over 403 miles of range.

Kia also says it’ll tailor the EV5 driving ranges to meet market demands – which is just as well because units bound for the Korean market will get slightly smaller batteries. Though it's worth noting only the bigger batteries came to the UK when the EV6 was launched.

The EV5 features one-pedal driving, meaning legit coasting will help bolster those driving ranges, and the same heat pump used in the EV6 to help the battery perform consistently in hot or colder weather.

Inside, the EV5’s cabin is taking a spacious, lounge-like presence with soft furnishings, massage seats, ambient lighting and a three-screen infotainment set-up. Of course, there are minimal buttons and the requisite connected technologies, including navigation, climate control and over-the-air updates. There’s also an optional head-up display.

Commensurate driver assist features – keyless entry, advanced adaptive cruise control (Kia refers to this as Highway Driving Assist 2) and remote parking functionality – are fast becoming as expected as four wheels in the car buying market, but that doesn't stop the car maker listing all the ways it can save you from your own driving errors.

The EV5 is going to have the capability of communicating with charging devices and grid infrastructure too. How very future.

But in the future, we'll still be able to camp. And Kia has thought of that, providing a fridge/warming compartment, a seat that folds flat and a table configuration for al fresco dining.

While it hasn't revealed any further details of the GT trim, we'll be awaiting them with bated breath (providing it's destined for these shores, of course).
