Maserati has cancelled the MC20 electric supercar because not enough people wanted it
Confirmation that the MC20 Folgore supercar project – a tri-motor 700bhp+ EV – has been stopped
Farewell, Maserati MC20 Folgore, we hardly knew thee. If at all. Now we never shall, because Maserati has confirmed it has killed off its incoming electric supercar.
A spokesperson confirmed to TopGear.com that the project was cancelled at the end of last year because of a lack of demand in the super sports car segment.
Meaning not enough people were interested in a fully electric Maserati supercar – even with the MC20’s supermodel looks – to warrant its build. And it would have been some build.
Maserati’s spent the best part of four years previewing the not-so-all-singing-but-definitely-all-dancing MC20 Folgore. Its underpinnings were designed in such a way as to accommodate a road-going supercar, a racing car (the GT2), and this EV.
There would have been three electric motors powering it. A projected 700bhp+ output, putting it considerably out of reach of the V6 petrol car’s 621bhp. Torque vectoring. A 0-62mph time of two seconds. And those same supermodel looks to grab your attention.
Though, it won’t have escaped your attention that there’s been a bit of a slump in electric car sales… and Maserati itself has been in a spot of bother of late. Last year, the boss was fired following a period of poor sales. In the first nine months of 2024, 11,800 new Maseratis found homes, versus 20,400 in the same period back in 2023.
“Maserati is in the red,” outgoing Stellantis boss Carlos Tavares told TopGear.com last year. “The reason is marketing. The Maserati brand is not clearly positioned, and the storytelling is not how it should be.
“The brand is not just about sports cars, it’s about gran turismo, it’s about quality of life, dolce vita and technology,” he added.
A halo, massively powerful and tech-focused supercar would have told a fair old story, but alas, it’s not to be. Sad to… not even see it before it went?
