Land Rover is building a hydrogen-fuelled Defender prototype

As part of JLR’s plan to go completely carbon neutral by 2039, towards the end of this year it’s to start testing a hydrogen-fuelled Defender.

“We know hydrogen has a role to play in the future powertrain mix across the whole transport industry,” said a chap called Ralph Clague, JLR’s hydrogen/fuel cell boss. “Alongside battery electric vehicles, it offers another zero tailpipe emission solution for the specific capabilities and requirements of Jaguar Land Rover’s world class line-up of vehicles.”

Land Rover will release six electric SUVs in the next five years, the first in 2024. Jaguar, meanwhile, will be EV-only from 2025 onwards.
