The ID.4 GTX is the first fast(ish) electric Volkswagen road car

Sporty VW EVs are coming. Twin-motor, 295bhp ID.4 is first up

Published: 28 Apr 2021

Welcome to the first of many schporty electric road-going Volkswagens – the ID.4 ‘GTX’. Big news is the addition of a second e-motor for all-wheel drive (when required, not all the time) and a reasonable, but not earth-shattering, 295bhp.

0-62mph takes a claimed 6.2 seconds. Not that quick verses some rivals, but still a worthwhile two-plus second improvement over a normal 201bhp ID.4. Meanwhile the same 77kWh (net) battery as the standard car means the GTX can travel just shy of 300 miles on a charge, and recharges at a max rate of 125kW.

What else is new? No doubt VW has made some changes to the ID.4’s suspension setup, but it hasn’t gone into details. We do know it’ll be available with a ‘Sports Package’ that drops the ride height by 15mm, and that adaptive dampers and progressive steering will be on the options list. Fingers crossed it’s a bit more engaging than the standard car.

If you somehow miss all the badges, identify a GTX by its body-colour sills, revised bumpers and new LED light signature. The wheels are 20-inches as standard, with 21s available as an extra. Subtle. UK prices haven’t been formally announced – but we'd expect the GTX to cost roughly the same as the existing ID.4 ‘Max’ (around £50,000), and for the first cars to arrive in the UK around August.

All of VW’s flagship, more performance-oriented EVs will wear the GTX badge – in basically the EV equivalent of GTI, GTD and GTE. So expect an ID.3 GTX in due course.
