Here's your first look at the sub-£25k Skoda Epiq small SUV
Teaser images of Skoda's new entry-level EV show off an... interesting new look
Škoda has revealed the first pictures of a new small electric car with a big name that - much like Cadillac - hates the letter 'c'. It's called the 'Epiq' and it's a small SUV targeting a sub-£25k price tag.
Though we're told the new Epiq will be ‘powerful and functional’, Skoda hasn't yet revealed anything about the electric motor(s) or battery size. However, we do know the Epiq’s range will be over 248 miles on one charge and the car will be equipped with bi-directional charging tech.
Looks... funky. It features Skoda's ‘Modern Solid’ design language, with a compact front end that runs to boxier lines at the rear, giving the Epiq its unique stance. The grille area – known as the Tech-Deck Face (our new favourite Gladiator name) and home to the sensor kit – is one glossy panel sitting under a snub nose which features a ‘word-badge’, rather than the familiar Skoda crest.
The T-shaped slim headlights are joined by a dash of LEDs running the full width of the bonnet. And there’s distinctive gappy bumpers at the front and back of the car – which may or may not have been inspired by the Jeep Avenger's blocky grille.
Škoda tells us the Epiq will be equipped with a bunch of tech, connected and driver assist features, along with those practical accessories (bag hooks, an ice scraper, umbrella) that are now familiar.
Inside the cabin, there’s a minimalist approach with plenty of ‘sustainable material’ pledges and a panoramic roof. The fancy-looking, two-spoke steering wheel has a number of physical controls but there’s a touchscreen and smaller driver display for infotainment. Škoda says there’ll also be a wireless phone charger, as part of the brand’s ‘mobile first’ approach.
And in news that'll surely excite, Škoda tells us the Epiq is going to be 4.1m long and roomy enough to boast 490 litres of suitcase space. That puts it up against the likes of the Nissan Juke, Yaris Cross and Suzuki Ignis.
Klaus Zellmer, boss of Škoda, said: “The coming Škoda Epiq will package a lot of car for an attractive price and a big interior with a compact size. Our customers want choices, which is why we are expanding our growing e-mobility portfolio into this popular segment. I hope these first design teasers demonstrate that the Epiq will shine because of its modern design, everyday range and user-friendly technologies – all of it affordable.”
The big touch-and-feel reveal of the Škoda Epiq is expected later in the year. What do you reqkon?
