Ford's littlest Transit van is going electric

The new second generation e-Transit Courier is slightly bigger than before and comes with a sharp new look

Exciting news – TG’s electric van of the year just got tiny! That might seem an odd thing to get excited about, but Ford’s new e-Transit Courier – the smallest van in the Transit range – will be a better match for the city with its car-like footprint. 

Ford says that the new, second generation van has a load bay that is 26 per cent bigger than before (it’s 180mm longer and 200mm wider than the outgoing version), which means it can now take two Euro pallets. Good news, because one just wasn’t enough for us. That makes for 2,900 litres of space in the back and a 700kg carrying capacity (22kg more than the internal combustion versions).

A nifty optional feature is the load-through bulkhead, which is a fancy way of saying you can shove long things through a hatch behind the passenger seat and use some of the cabin space. Tick another box and you can get a little fold-out table for doing paperwork on or using your laptop. 

The e-Transit Courier looks pretty swanky inside and out – the sharp front end will look lovely as it looms aggressively in your rearview mirror, while the cabin will soothe away road rage thanks to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, as well as the 12in digital instrument panel and 12in infotainment touchscreen.

The vans will also benefit from Ford Pro software, which sends live data back to the fleet manager and helps with things like charging. If you were feeling kind you could even heat up your fleet of vans remotely before the day starts. 

The e-Transit Courier gets a 134bhp e-motor under the bonnet, but Ford hasn’t said how big the battery is yet. You will be able to charge whatever battery it is from 10–80 per cent in less than 35 minutes though says the firm, thanks to a decent 100kW charging capacity. So that’s nice.

The electric version of the Courier will go into production at the beginning of 2024, while petrol (1.0-litre 3cyl with 123bhp) and diesel (1.5-litre with 99bhp) versions can be ordered this summer for delivery before the end of the year.
