The DS No 8 coupe EV costs £51k (but the neck warmer is optional)
DS has brought its big French cruiser to the party and it's substantially cheaper than the Polestar 4. Tempted?
The fancy DS No 8 now has a price. For a relatively modest £50,790 (hey, we said relatively) the carmaker has undercut the Polestar 4 by almost ten grand.
So, what’s on offer? There are three electric drivetrains, starting with the entry-level FWD version with its 74kWh of usable capacity and 342 miles of range. That one gets 227bhp and does the 0-62mph sprint in a sensible 7.7 seconds. More of a jog than a sprint...
Next up is the 242bhp FWD Long Range variant – priced from £54,690 – which gets a bigger 97.2kWh battery and the headline-grabbing 466 miles of range, made possible by DS's obsession with lowering drag versus the related e-3008 and Grandland Electric.
Finally the No 8 AWD LR (only a hashtag away from very secure password) is yours for £63,290. Range drops to 415 miles on account of its extra motor and 345bhp... and new-found ability to smash through 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds.
Worth mentioning that all of those get a power boost on kickdown, so for short bursts you're actually looking at 256, 276 and 370bhp for each. Power to the people, indeed. Top speed maxes out at 118mph across the board.
The DS No 8 supports up to 160kW fast charging, enabling a 20-80 per cent recharge in less than 30 minutes – clever battery management can shut charge off at 80 per cent to protect the cells from degradation if you so choose. At home, the 11kW AC onboard charger means the same top-up takes almost nine hours.
There are two trims: Pallas and Étoile. In the cabin, entry-level Pallas includes 3D-connected navigation on a voice-controllable 16in touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charge point for your mobile, keyless entry, parking sensors, a reversing camera and privacy glass. There's also dual-zone climate control, trick lighting and floor mats (let's not forget those, eh).
For an extra four grand Étoile spec adds a 'DS Luminascreen', which in normal-person-speak translates to 'fancy light-up grille'. It also gets more sophisticated headlights with night vision, DS's semi-autonomous drive assist features, a digital mirror, electric hands-free tailgate and a head-up display. Meanwhile the parking camera gets a 360° upgrade.
DS's Tech and Comfort packs give you ample freedom to cherry pick what you like – and the latter even includes a neck warmer in the headrest. Taking a leaf out of the Mercedes cabriolet playbook, there. We like.
