The cheapest Volkswagen ID.3 now costs £28k

Entry-level electric hatch gets a smaller battery with a 217-mile range

Published: 14 Apr 2021

Voltswagen – sorry, Volkswagen – has revealed a pair of entry-level ID.3s, the cheapest clocking in at £28,370 after the government’s plug-in vehicle grant.

This particular powertrain offering is dubbed ‘Pure Performance’, offering up a smaller, lighter 45kWh battery with 148bhp and 229lb ft of torque. As such, VW quotes 0-62mph in 8.9secs and a top speed of 99mph – the same top speed as all ID.3s.

You can buy one in either ‘City’ or ‘Style’ trim, and both cars can regain 137 miles of range in half an hour when plugged into a 100kW rapid charger. Stick it on a 7.2kW home charger and it’ll take you 7.5 hours to go from five per cent battery to full. One final bit of number crunching: a CCS charge point will fill it up from five per cent to 80 per cent in 31 minutes.

‘City’ is the trim that offers 217 miles, and comes with enough kit to keep you occupied. There’s a 10in nav/infotainment system, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers, a pair of USB-C ports in the back, electric mirrors, LEDs, 10-colour ambient lighting and a few driver assists (cruise control, lane keeping, collision warning and parking sensors).

The ‘Style’ trim offers just two miles of range less – 215 – with prices starting from £32,470 with the grant – and what you lose in range and money you gain in VW’s design and comfort packs, and new 18in wheels.
