BMW’s new e-scooter looks like it’s landed from 2037

The CE 04 has up to 81 miles of range and is brilliantly odd

Published: 08 Jul 2021

We may not be known for motorbikes on TopGear.com, but we're sticklers for particularly interesting two-wheelers. And we think BMW’s new CE 04 is, well, pretty noteworthy.

The productionised version of a concept first shown way back in 2017, the CE 04 is fundamentally an e-scooter. BMW has history when it comes to oddly styled motorcycles – sometimes it doesn’t work out (remember the C1, with its fixed roof?), but we think this thing looks fantastic. Proper sci-fi.

An 8.9kWh battery gives the CE04 up to 81 miles of range, which is pretty good, while a 75mph top speed means it ought not to feel too out of its depth on faster roads. 0-31mph takes 2.6 seconds, so more often than not you’ll be the one winning the traffic light GP. Spec the optional 7kW fast-charger and you can go from flat to full in 1hr 40 mins.

It has stability and traction control, ABS and several drive (ride?) modes. A 10.25-inch display screen displays maps as well as speed/charge etc, and there are special compartments for your helmet and phone (the latter is ventilated and features wireless charging).

Thoughts?
