The Alpha Wolf might just be our new favourite pickup

Retro-tastic EV start-up Alpha wants a piece of the electric pickup pie

Published: 16 Mar 2021

We’d imagine you’re now fairly familiar with Alpha. The Californian EV start-up has made quite the splash in the past few months, despite having only released renders of products it hopes to launch.

Thankfully, those renders have been of fantastically retro EVs including the Ace Coupe and the JAX off-roader. Alpha reckons its first cars could be on actual roads (and off-road trails, of course) by 2023.

So, to its latest creation. This is called the Wolf, and as you can probably tell it’s a compact pickup that’s based on the JAX’s off-road platform.

For scale, it’s just over 4.7m long and slightly under 2m wide. A current generation, single cab Toyota Hilux is over 5.3m long and 1.85m wide. Alpha reckons the Wolf (brilliant name) will have a towing capacity of 1,360kg – that’s compared to the Hilux’s 3,500kg – and it isn’t yet predicting a figure for payload in that compact bed. Looks like you’ll be able to get a brilliant-looking lightbar and solar panel combo though.

Like the JAX, the Wolf will be available in either front- or all-wheel drive forms. Expect a 75-85kWh battery pack and between 250 and 275 miles of range on a single charge. Oh, and it’ll do 0-60mph in 6.2 seconds. Very important.

The exterior looks superb, doesn’t it? The interior is much more modern, with a digital display for the dials, a large central screen and barely any buttons whatsoever.

So, what do we think, Internet? How does the Wolf stack up against its fellow EV pickup renders and concepts?
