TG's best value electric car: the Skoda Enyaq iV
Skoda's first purpose built electric car is our best value EV
What is it?
The Enyaq is Skoda’s first ever purpose-built EV, built on the same MEB platform as its Volkswagen ID.4 and Audi Q4 e-tron crossover siblings.
It may be electric, but it still wants to follow the classic Skoda principles of value for money and practicality. To that end, it’s longer and larger than the ID.4 with over 100 litres more boot space when all the seats are folded flat. It’s also cheaper, with Enyaq prices starting at £34,850 compared to £36,550 for the ID.4.
Give me some details about the Skoda Enyaq iV.
The Enyaq first arrived in 2020 and the range has been slowly developing ever since. There’s now even a chopped Enyaq Coupe that launched in January 2022 with a sporty 295bhp vRS variant. Here we’re focused on the standard Enyaq iV, though, which at the time of writing comes in three flavours – 60, 80 and 80x.
The Enyaq iV 60 houses a 58kWh battery under its floor and a single 177bhp electric motor on its rear axle, while both 80s get a power bump and a larger 77Wh battery for more range. The 80x is the most potent with 261bhp thanks to a second motor mounted on the front axle.
Why should I care about the Skoda Enyaq iV?
It probably won’t be performance you care about if you’re looking at an Enyaq. The boxy shape gives away its true purpose, and it really does nail the brief. We very much prefer it to the Volkswagen and Audi equivalents.
It’s not rapid, but there’s enough instant torque to make it feel much quicker than something like a diesel Kodiaq. More importantly though, it’s well-refined and fairly softly sprung. Perfect.
Why did you give the Skoda Enyaq iV an award?
Surprisingly, the Enyaq won our ‘best value electric car’ award for being really rather good value. If you can stretch to the £40,000 mark, the mid-range 80 with its bigger battery, 329-mile claimed range and standard 19-inch wheels is probably the pick of the bunch.
All Enyaq iVs are practical, hardy and still a little bit stylish inside, though. Plus, you still get the handy umbrella in the door and the neat little ice scraper under the fuel filler cap that Skoda prides itself on. The powertrain may be new, but the Skoda philosophy is still going strong.
