Woah, BMW’s going to build 50 versions of the gorgeous two-seater Skytop roadster

... and it'll get the M8 Competition's V8 heart, too

Published: 11 Oct 2024

BMW has announced it will turn its stunning two-seater Skytop concept into a limited number of road-going production cars. Happy Friday.

Yep, that’s right. First showcased at Villa d’Este earlier this year and spun off the current 8 Series, the 633bhp production version of the roadster will feature the M8 Competition’s 4.4-litre V8 powerplant, all-wheel-drive setup and cover off the 0-62mph sprint in a blistering 3.3 seconds.

Taking design cues from a number of iconic models from BMW's back catalogue, including but not limited to the Fisker-designed Z8, the concept Skytop’s lozenge-shaped body features a pronounced shark-nosed front end, with custom-designed slim headlights and the signature kidney grille lighting it all up.

The clean body lines flow uninterrupted into the sleek rear end, which has a boat-like spline. The thing has been hand-painted in a fetching silver hue, and the panelling is so smooth, there’s not even a door handle. Instead, BMW’s added winglets to the door shoulders to keep the body lines unimpeded. Reckon this'll be engineered into production? We hope so.

Inside, there’s elegant use of contrasting shades, crystals, brogue decor, a Bowers & Wilkins audio system and plenty of (albeit discretely integrated) connected tech – basically everything that adds plenty of zeros to the price tag. The cow-clad roll bar sits behind bovine-wrapped seats and under the leather-trimmed-but-mostly-fake-cow soft-top roof.

BMW design boss Adrian Van Hooydonk said: “The BMW Skytop is a truly exotic design and offers a combination of driving dynamics and elegance at the highest level. To finally be able to announce that this car will be built is like a dream come true.”

Though, a dream for only a select few. BMW's only building 50 road-going Skytops... and all are already spoken for.
