How cute is this electric Renault 4L Plein Air?

The e-Plein Air makes us want to drop everything and head to the beach

Published: 23 Jul 2019

As the UK basks in glorious sunshine, and we all complain that it’s actually too hot, what we really need is the perfect beach vehicle. Step forward then, the Renault e-Plein Air concept.

As you can probably tell, it’s an electrified replica of the original Renault 4L Plein Air, which was launched in 1968 but never really took off among the masses. Only around 500 Plein Airs were built in the end, with most being sold to rich-kids for use as, you guessed it, beach toys.

That’s exactly what we need right now though, and with the silent electric powertrain from a Twizy, the e-Plein Air wouldn’t even disturb a flock of ice-cream stealing seagulls.

The concept has been built by Renault Classic, Renault Design and Melun Retro Passion for the 10th anniversary of the Renault 4L festival. Yep, that’s actually a thing. Together, the three groups have replaced the original dials with a digital display, changed the grille for something a bit cuter, and whacked a picnic basket where you would usually expect to find rear seats.

Inside there are re-trimmed seats, and on the outside a few retro graphics complete the look.

We don’t have any more technical details unfortunately, so we can’t tell you whether the range is better or worse than the Twizy’s 62 miles from its 6.1kWh battery. But be honest, do you really care?

Look! It’s so sweeeeet.
