Daihatsu’s tiny new concept cars, including a Copen, are unsurprisingly adorable
Welcome to your new perfect, um, *five* car garage. But they’re five really small cars
Daihatsu has revealed a quintet of concepts set for the upcoming Japan Mobility Show, which appears to reaffirm the Japanese manufacturer’s commitment to tiny, adorable cars.
Apparently, these new cars represent “five ways of expressing staying close to people and lives in the mobility society of the future”. Quite literally ‘staying closer’, judging by how tiny they all are.
And yet despite Daihatsu’s explicit message that it absolutely “did not give priority to styling” – instead looking at functionality and actual human use – they’ve all turned out looking quite brilliantly adorable.
This approach to tiny things apparently extends to the resolution of the images, though it's high enough for you to get a snapshot of your new, no-doubt hurriedly updated ideal five-car garage.
Daihatsu me:MO

No doubt named after the noise an adorable children’s cartoon character makes, the me:MO is a modular battery-electric car able to change its form and design over “a long time in response to changes in the customer’s stage of life and usage”. Like all but one on this list, it’s proper Kei-car length (less than 3.4m long). And like all on this list, really very cute.
Daihatsu UNIFORM Truck and UNIFORM Cargo

Their caps lock, not ours. A pair of Kei trucks, these two adorable workhorses – should that be work ponies? – are again battery powered, with flat cabins and luggage areas.

Plus, they come with external power supplies, “which expand the range of applications to include [a] mobile shop”. No doubt selling teddy bears.
Daihatsu Osanpo

Another battery-powered Daihatsu concept, measuring in at Kei car standard, which apparently allows drivers “to enjoy the comfort of open-air driving with the ease of going for a walk, creating a slower value in their daily lives”. This is a concept TopGear.com can fully get on board with.
Daihatsu Vision Copen

The Copen lives! It’s slightly longer than a Kei car – measuring 3.8m long – although there’s a 1.3-litre petrol engine up front powering the rear wheels. It also features an electrified roof mechanism, looks fantastic and is ultimately the tiny roadster you need right now.
Make ‘em all, Daihatsu.
