Video: Hutch restores Ernest Hemingway’s Chrysler

Ernest Hemingway, author of A Farewell to Arms and The Old Man and the Sea, was something of a petrosexual. But his last car, a 1955 Chrysler New Yorker, disappeared mysteriously after he died in 1961. Having changed hands several times, it's recently surfaced in Cuba, the author's home for 22 years.

Thing is, it's a bit knackered. And while its artisan custodians want to restore it, there's a bit of a problem - the island's US embargo prevents any American products from entering Cuba, which includes car parts.

And that, bafflingly, is where David Soul enters the frame. Better known as Detective Ken Hutchinson from Starsky & Hutch, the classic car fan and Hemmingway devotee is a full-time British resident and British citizen so he can source and send the parts legally. Which he plans to do, so the car can be rebuilt in time for the International Hemingway Colloquium in Havana this June.
