The ten most expensive cars sold at Monterey

£260m worth of cars were sold, featuring some eye-wateringly desirable stuff

  • By exuberant car-buying standards, Monterey 2016 was a bit... frugal.

After four days of lots going under the hammer, sales had only reached a meagre £260,500,000, 13.1 per cent down on last year’s numbers and 13.8 per cent lower than the dizzy heights reached in 2014.

It wasn’t all bad news for auctioneers though. The average sale price between the likes of RM Sotheby’s, Bonhams, Mecum, Russo & Steele and Gooding & Company was slightly higher than in 2015, with the latter raking in some £98 million from 114 items which met their reserve.

So it’s not like things dropped to Cash in the Attic standards.

In fact, seven cars surpassed the magic £7,550,760 figure (about $10,000,000 for you American folk), representing nearly a third of total sales.

Starting with the three other cars that make up the top ten, here are those very vehicles; the most expensive motors of the blue-riband event...
