Great Scott! The DeLorean is making a comeback

Change in US law means the 1980s icon will be put into production for 2017

Published: 28 Jan 2016

Children of the 1980s, rejoice: the DeLorean Motor Company has announced that it will soon begin production of the DMC-12.

How? A recent change in US legislation means a low-volume production run of the fabled supercar can begin. Now, at this point, we could simply reel off a list of quotes from Back to the Future and be done with it. But you need more, so we shall continue.

DMC – a company started by Stephen Wynne in ’95 – used to ply its trade in rebuilding and repairing the stock of some 9,000 original DMC-12 cars left on the roads. However, following the change, it has been given the green light to build DMC-12 replicas. In Texas. The original car remember, was built in Northern Ireland.

A statement on the company's website said: “The new law provides common-sense regulatory relief for small businesses that would otherwise be treated as if they were producing millions of cars.”

It goes on to say that the new law allows small companies to meet Clean Air Act standards by installing an engine and emissions equipment produced by another – say GM or Ford. DMC says it has been working “for some time” to procure an engine supplier and other parts, and are aiming for a small production run of around 300 cars in 2017.

They won’t come cheap though, with prices expected to be in the region of £70k (around $100,000).

“A number of hurdles exist before production can begin,” DMC noted, “and we’re still early on in this process of determining the feasibility of moving forward.”

But move forward it will. Speaking to Texas radio station KPRC, Wynne said: “It is fantastic. It is a gamechanger for us.”
