Gallery: the five coolest cars of the Taj Ma Garaj sale

John Dixon’s crazy collection is going under the hammer with no reserves

  • If you’re into your old-school Porsches or Volkswagens, you’ll most-likely be aware of the name John Dixon.

Dixon was a car collector who created the museum and event space ‘Taj Ma Garaj’ in order to house and display his eclectic group of vehicles. Unfortunately, he lost a battle with cancer back in 2013.

Now though, his cars are back to bring joy to many others, as they’ll all go under the hammer with no reserve during an RM Sotheby’s sale in September.

There are more than 30 vehicles to be sold, all of which would leave you drooling, but we’ve picked our five favourites to share with you here.

  • 1971 Mangosta Sport Buggy

The Mangosta was designed to be the last word in dune buggy luxury. You may think that’s a bit of an oxymoron, and you’d be, well, right. They were so expensive that production was stopped with just six cars made.

  • 1971 Mangosta Sport Buggy

This one was the company’s original show car. Just look at that lovely brown interior - it matches the metallic brown paint beautifully. Mmmmm, brown.

  • 1953 Porsche 356 Limousine Custom

Yep. We couldn’t believe it either – this 356 has been chopped and stretched to become the ultimate retro-limo. Details are scant surrounding the modifications, but it has certainly been done to a high standard…

  • 1953 Porsche 356 Limousine Custom

The original, air-cooled flat-4 engine is still in the back, and even the front and rear lights are period correct. The odometer also says it has covered just 112 miles in its 66-year life.

  • 1981 Porsche 924 Carrera GTS Clubsport

Despite losing the standard car’s pop-up headlights, the Clubsport is perhaps the ultimate 924. Just 15 were built, all painted in Guards Red, and power was up to 280bhp from the turbocharged inline four-pot.

It was also light. The windows were sliding plastic, most of the panels were fibreglass, and, as you can see, the interior was stripped of any home comforts.

  • 1956 Volkswagen Beetle Outlaw

It isn’t just box-fresh, showroom quality stuff in Dixon’s collection either. This modded split-window Beetle bares plenty of battle scars.

  • 1956 Volkswagen Beetle Outlaw

It was built by a man named Franz Muhr, and in classic style it features an open engine hanging off the back axle.

  • 1958 Porsche 356 A Sedan Delivery Custom

As is always the way, we’ve saved the best for last. Whether you want to call it a shooting brake, a breadvan or an estate – this is perhaps the coolest 356 we’ve ever seen.

  • 1958 Porsche 356 A Sedan Delivery Custom

Some may think it sacrilege, but the bodywork has been beautifully created and it looks every inch of its era.

  • Bonus shot…

We couldn’t miss the chance to show off the interior of this custom 356. Check out the wicker passenger seat! Now, where can we have a lie down?
