Buy this Buick Bonneville racer for £150K
165mph 1952 Buick comes up for sale. We must have it immediately
Where do we begin with this…thing? It started out as an ordinary 1952 Buick Super Riviera Coupe, before a man called Jeff Brock (a sculptor by trade, unsurprisingly) dragged it from the Arizona sawmill in which it sat in 2009 and turned it into this – a six-time class winner at Bonneville.
In 2013 the ‘Bombshell Betty’ hit 165.735mph, which is quite rapid. The engine is a bored out straight-eight with many go-faster bits, all of which are detailed in the classified ad’. Yep, if you hadn’t already guessed, this thing’s for sale. The seller wants $195,000, which in today’s money is bang on £147K. Audi R8 money, that.
Then there’s the way it looks. Like a cross between something out of Mad Max, and what everyone thought the year 2016 would look like 60 years ago. We’re loving the finish – or lack thereof – chopped roof and wonderfully proud air intake (at least we think that’s what it is) that must impede the driver’s vision somewhat. Not that the big Buick looks particularly easy to drive in other respects – those fared-in front wheels must mean it has the turning circle of a small aircraft carrier – but some forward vision would be nice.
Do we want it? Yes, we absolutely do.
