Chevrolet Camaro news - Chevy creates new Camaro - 2006
Chevrolet, like Dodge, wants a slice of the retro muscle-car action, and is set to field this reborn Camaro to prove it.
Thankfully, it harks back to the late-Sixties' heyday of the nameplate, not the disastrously flabby Nineties' editions.
And although it's just a concept, this one has a strong chance of making it to production two or three years from now.
The reason is that, next year, GM's Australian branch Holden is set to launch an all-new Commodore.
It's rear-drive, it's got a V8 option and... well, you don't need to be a genius to see where this is going. GM is getting pretty good at putting different bodies on its global platforms.
To propel the Camaro, any engine up to the 400bhp Corvette small-block V8 will be just fine. Budget versions would use something smaller, and possibly a cheap live axle, to be sure of keeping the entry price as close as possible to the Mustang's.
Big V8s and rear drive never went away in the US. The wildly successful return of the Mustang (plus the Chrysler 300C and Charger) shows that when the formula is right, the people will come back in droves.
