The Caterham 620S is a track car with creature comforts
Want a silly quick Seven with seat heaters and a windscreen? Step this way
This is the slightly less hardcore version of Caterham’s most hardcore car: the 620R. For the rest of us though, it’s still pretty hardcore.
Dubbed the ‘620S’, it’s a more road-friendly version of Caterham’s top-flight loony track machine.
Binning the sequential box, coccyx-cracking carbon seats and diddy screen, the S offers potty performance to people who like warm bums, traditional H-pattern gearboxes and not eating flies for dinner.
Still powered by a 310bhp two-litre, supercharged Ford Duratec engine, the S isn’t a slouch.
But because of the more slower gear change and a 60kg weight gain (610kg overall), the 0-60mph time has dropped from a Veyron-rivaling 2.8 seconds, to 3.4.
To save you whipping out your calculator, that equates to a power-to-weight ratio of 508bhp per tonne.
For the first time the wide-bodied ‘S5’ chassis is also available for people that Caterham call, ahem, ‘generously-proportioned’. Aside from being able to fit in the car, other benefits of the £2,500 option include added luggage space and an increased range thanks to a larger fuel tank.
A road-friendly suspension set-up, plus 15in wheels with less race-inspired tyres also make the S more at home on anywhere but the glistening tarmac of a circuit.
However the limited-slip differential, lightweight flywheel and brake master cylinder of the 620R are all still present and correct.
Tempted? Well, prices for the 620S start at £44,995, with deliveries happening later this year. When it’s dry. Which is a very good thing.
