Volvo quietly kills off XC40 PHEV, V60/V90 Cross Country and S90 saloon in the UK

UK business quotes carmaker’s prioritising of full electrification

Published: 13 Jun 2023

Volvo’s big saloon is no more. And perhaps one of its coolest estate cars too has been canned. The Geely-owned carmaker has taken a giant Scandinavian axe to four models in the UK.

A Volvo Cars spokesperson confirmed to TopGear.com that the S90, along with the V60 and V90 Cross Country estates – the latter a Scandi alternative to the old uber-cool Audi A6 Allroad – and all versions of the XC40 plug-in hybrid have been removed from sale in the UK.

The reason? “We are rapidly transforming our product offer, which means not only moving towards full electrification, but also shifting to new platforms and technologies across all our cars,” the spokesperson said. “We will naturally need to evolve and consolidate our line-up as we prioritise fully electric cars and make this technological transition.

“As a result, and based on existing orders and available production for the UK market, plug-in hybrid versions of the XC40 Recharge, along with all V60 Cross Country, V90 Cross Country and S90 variants have been removed from the UK line-up.”

No surprise if you consider how few versions of those cars you actually see on UK roads. Plus, the XC40 hybrid wasn’t long for this world, considering the EX30 – a slightly smaller, but much faster fully electric Volvo SUV – has just been revealed.

Still, a V90 Cross Country makes a solid second-hand buy. Cool, too.
