Hyundai and General Motors might build a car together
Automotive heavyweights to collaborate for cheaper and greener vehicle manufacturing
Two of the world's biggest carmakers are making friends to see if they can make their respective models cheaper and cleaner. Yes folks, it seems General Motors and Hyundai have signed a memorandum of understanding to do business together.
The unlikely pair apparently want to collaborate on all fronts, suggesting they might actually build a car together in the future. As expected, it also seems they want to cherry-pick the best of each other’s tech strengths.
The framework agreement will see the ‘frenemies’ look into sourcing raw materials, steels and other components to lower costs in manufacturing for internal combustion cars, electric and hydrogen-based powertrains – across passenger and commercial vehicles.
"GM and Hyundai have complementary strengths and talented teams," said General Motors CEO Mary Barra. "Our goal is to unlock the scale and creativity of both companies to deliver even more competitive vehicles to customers faster and more efficiently."
What do we reckon then readers? Could we see a hydrogen-powered Corvette FCEV with the fake dual-clutch gearbox and drift mode from an Ioniq 5 N?
