This is Range Rover's new Evoque Convertible, and it's full of holes
‘World’s first premium compact SUV convertible’ previewed. In wire form
The car you see above is the Range Rover Evoque convertible, due to be officially unveiled next month ahead of its arrival on forecourts next year.
The keen-eyed among you will notice to the new Evoque convertible seems deficient in a number of traditional regards. Upholstery, for one. Bodywork. Tyres. Solid three-dimensional form of any note, in fact.
Thoughtful types that we are, Top Gear pointed this out to the good souls at Land Rover. In response, they politely informed us that the cars shown above are not, in fact, actual finished Range Rover Evoque Convertibles, but rather 1:1-scale wire models described as ‘bespoke sculptures'.
We’re told the wireframes are ‘crafted from aluminium and finished in a range of vibrant colours’, and will be displayed outside swanky London locations ‘to give the public a chance to see how the Evoque Convertible will look in its natural urban environment’.
Only, y’know, holier. And more… wirey.
Anyhow. Land Rover tells us the real, non-wireframe Evoque Convertible will be revealed in November, which points to a debut at the Los Angeles show in the middle of the month.
We were told back in March that a drop-top Evoque was working its way through the pipes, with Land Rover promising ‘the world’s first premium compact SUV convertible’, a claim doubtless hotly disputed by the much-missed Nissan Murano CrossCabrio.
Beyond employment of a fabric soft-top, the Evoque Convertible looks likely to adhere slavishly to the formula of its absurdly popular hard-top brother: expect that facelifted, um, face, along with JLR’s shiny new Ingenium engine range.
Judging by this preview, brake-by-wire technology will surely be standard. As will steer-by-wire. And sit-by-wire.

“The Range Rover Evoque Convertible is perfectly suited to the urban surroundings of a city like London,” says Land Rover design boss Gerry McGovern. “The locations chosen reflect the refined and luxurious lifestyle of an Evoque Convertible customer.”
No mention of muddy wellies, or approach and departures angles, then…
