Does the Jaguar Project 8 look better without a giant spoiler?

Answer: yes, yes it does. Only 15 of these four-seat, 592bhp monsters will be built

Published: 05 Jun 2019

Don’t get us wrong, we’re partial to a giant rear wing here at TG. Very partial. But Jaguar has revealed a very limited version of its unhinged XE-based Project 8 that comes without the scaffolding on the back and… yes.

It’s officially called the ‘Touring’ specification (yeah, we got excited too about the prospect of a Project 8 estate but that’s because we love a fast estate more than we love giant wings), and only 15 will be built, out of the Project 8’s original allocation of 300.

It’s a no-cost option to spec your Project 8 in the manner of this Touring. Obviously, there is a significant initial cost – the same as the ‘regular’ P8, which is £149,995. For this outlay and the appropriate box ticked, you get a thinner, fixed rear spoiler in place of the nutjob P8's adjustable carbon fibre version, as well as a fixed front splitter. Plus, it’s only available as a four-seater, not a two-seat track special. Good.

There are also colours you can choose – orange, the blue you see above, grey and green. The decals have been binned for the Touring spec, though you can option them back on if you so wish. That would be incorrect but we’re not ones to judge.

Elsewhere, that monster drivetrain and suspension setup remains: a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 delivering a haymaker of a punch, in the form of 592bhp, 0-62mph in 3.7s and a top speed of 186mph (the normal P8 does 200mph). Still fast enough to give you nightmares. Plus fancy suspension courtesy of Eibach and Bilstein, monster brakes, a wider track...

“Touring specification extends the appeal of Project 8 to performance car enthusiasts and collectors who prefer a more discreet appearance, without compromising its driver-focused on-road dynamics,” explains Jag’s Special Vehicle Ops director Jamal Hameedi.
