The City of London might implement a 15mph speed limit

How slow is too slow?

Published: 29 May 2019

Lots of London is already under a 20mph limit, but one area might be about to go a step further and implement the country’s first 15mph speed restriction.

Yep, the City of London – the ‘Square Mile’ of land that’s home to many of Britain’s biggest banks, business and law firms – says it could introduce the 15mph limit by 2021, should the government give its approval.

The City of London Corporation, the area’s governing body, says the move is part of its plan to reduce traffic by 25 per cent by 2030, and by 50 per cent by 2044. Some 90 per cent of all journeys made in the City are partially or entirely walked it says, and road traffic has halved in the last 20 years. It has 15 Tube stations.

Drive through the City at rush hour and you won’t get much beyond 10mph, let alone 15. You’d be mad to try.

With that in mind, do we think the City’s latest wheeze will help make this tiny area of London safer, quieter and therefore greener? Answers below.
