BMW has invented mid-drift refuelling
Heard of in-flight refuelling? Here’s the BMW M5's tyre-shredding version
Tomorrow, BMW will show us a Guinness World Record drift. Upset that the old M5 had its ‘world’s longest drift’ honours snaffled away, it appears to have reclaimed the title with the all-new M5. And it’s gone to extreme lengths to do so.
While previous records have used large fuel tanks to sidestep the tricky issue of running out of fuel mid-drift, BMW’s engineering bods have spent much time and money working out how to do in-skid refuelling. It involves two fully lit M5s and a very brave person wielding a fuel pump, as the video above shows…
The title of this teaser video implies the new record drift lasted eight hours. Which rather makes us wonder how BMW has solved other logistical issues. We know how the car has been kept fuelled, but what about its driver? And how have they solved more delicate, bathroom-related matters?
Perhaps the full video, shown tomorrow, will reveal all…
