BMW and Toyota to build sports car

Interesting news, TopGear.commers: BMW and Toyota have today announced they will "explore the possibility" of building a car together.

At a meeting at the BMW Welt in Munich, the two motoring giants signed a memorandum of understanding that, over the coming months, will see both researching powertrain electrification, lightweight technologies, fuel cell development and - most interestingly - future vehicle architectures.

Basically, a BMW/Toyota sports car. Norbert Reithofer, BMW chief, provided perhaps a small hint at the direction said sports car could take, when he noted that BMW aims to "shape the iconic change [in industry] as pioneers, in a responsible and sustainable manner." Hmm, sustainable, eh?

BMW have already signed a deal with Toyota to provide diesel engines from 2014, as well as researching lithium-ion battery cell technology. But because we're only getting whiffs, it's time for a little conjecture - what could they come up with?

Naturally, your mind will wander to Toyota's recent partnership with Subaru and the offspring of that relationship that just happens to be one of the finest sports cars we've ever driven; the GT86 (above)/BRZ combo.
