England’s first fully electric indoor motocross track is here
Bad weather? No problem. This indoor bike track has got you covered (literally)
Located on the edge of the Lake District, Cumbria Moto Park is the country's first indoor motocross track, complete with an all-electric lineup of KTM bikes to choose from.
The indoor track was created by local farmers Greg Hall and Stephen Biggin, who are keen motocross and car enthusiasts. The idea came to mind when Hall was inside the original chicken shed in Wigton, packing eggs one day, thinking “This isn't much fun…I need some sort of job satisfaction”.
His next thought? “How about a little arena for bikes?” and the rest, as they say, is history...or at least, history in the making.
After visiting similar experiences in Glasgow and Northern Ireland, the two came together to create the all-electric experience. Hall says: “The first idea was to use pit bikes, but after speaking to the local council, they weren't in favour of anything with a petrol engine, due to the noise.” That’s when the idea for electric bikes came about.
When it comes to maintenance, the team have it covered. With no gears, clutch, kickstart, fuel or oil, servicing the bikes is a breeze. The bikes' average run time is 1.5 hours, or 40 minutes for more experienced riders at a faster pace. The sessions are split into three lots of 10 minutes, meaning the bikes can charge in between.
The park caters for all ages and abilities with four different KTM bikes to choose from; a balance bike, the KTM e-drive electric balance bike, the KTM SX-E 5 and the KTM Freeride. Whether you’re just starting out or a seasoned pro, you have a few options and an additional practice track to start out on.
Hall's passion is infectious. He asked himself, “Why not open the farm up and let people have an opportunity to have a go on a motorbike that wouldn't necessarily ever do it?” Why not, indeed. Similar to a go karting experience, you can borrow protective clothing including a helmet, chest protection, gloves, boots, trousers and shirt. The team gives every customer a rider briefing, going through safety, balance and bike modes before giving you free rein on the track.
“It's not about training the next motocross rider or catering for professionals to train," says Hall. "It's for everybody. If you're good you go around quicker and if you're less experienced you'll go at your own pace."
Sessions start from just £10 and the facilities are currently open three days a week. So what are you waiting for?
