Clone Rivals: Koenigsegg One:1 vs... Koenigsegg One:1

The latest Castrol Titanium Trial sees Koenigsegg's factory driver, Christoffer Nygaard, up against... himself

This fourth Titanium Trial – titled Clone Rivals – is arguably Castrol’s most ambitious instalment yet. Unequivocally, it’s the fastest. The aim of the ground-breaking challenge was always to push the limits of driving performance, testing the driver, the car, and – crucially – Castrol EDGE like never before.

For over 115 years, Castrol has been driven by a restless spirit of innovation and determination to push the boundaries of what is possible, with the constant goal of developing the best engine oils. It is this thrill, this excitement of creating and redefining what is possible that drives everything Castrol does.

  • This is the Koenigsegg One:1. The name – One:1 – is not merely the product of an over-creative marketing mind. It is a wholly accurate description of what is arguably the car’s most-notable unique feature. This Koenigsegg weighs just 1,361kg and produces 1,361PS (1,341 bhp) meaning it has a power-to-weight ratio of one to one, and a total power output of one megawatt. Koenigsegg likes to describe the One:1 as the world’s first ‘megacar’.

The result? Pure exhilaration and blistering speed. This 5.0-litre, twin-turbocharged, V8-powered megacar reaches 62mph in just 2.8 seconds...

  • Christoffer Nygaard is the man entrusted with the testing and development of Koenigsegg’s extreme road cars. He’s a Danish racing driver who spends most of his days on a test track, somewhere in the world, pushing the latest creation from the Swedish manufacturer to the limits.

Christian von Koenigsegg is the founder of the car company that bears his name. He launched Koenigsegg in 1994 with a vision to create the perfect sports car but also strongly believes that perfection is a moving target. Over the company’s 22-year history, there has been a series of increasingly powerful, more extreme models and, not merely because of its astonishing power-to-weight statistics, the One:1 is the most extreme yet. It is the 240mph realisation of one of the most exclusive production car projects in history. Only seven examples – including one prototype – have ever been made and it is this uncompromising pursuit of perfection that led Castrol to begin working with Koenigsegg.

  • Ascari is a unique test of any high performance car’s credentials. It is 3.7 miles long and features 25 highly demanding, technically challenging turns, elevations and camber changes. For Castrol, choosing this car and this circuit for its fourth Titanium Trial made perfect sense.

There are not too many more demanding combinations than a Koenigsegg One:1 being pushed to its limits at a track like Ascari. When the person pushing those limits is the man with the most intimate knowledge of that car’s capabilities, and he is trying to beat himself – or a cloned version of himself – it’s a truly unique, highly exacting test of man and machine.

And oil. When engines are operating under such extreme high pressures, an oil such as Castrol EDGE boosted with TITANIUM FST™ gives you the confidence to keep pushing those limits.

  • Production of the video of this latest Titanium Trial was a match for the Trial itself. Filming took place during a full week at the end of March and, as with every Trial to date, the objective was to use all of the excitement and drama of pushing cars to their limits to achieve two complementary objectives.

First, to prove just exactly what is possible when you really do have man and machine in perfect harmony.

And secondly, to prove beyond all doubt that there is a reason why the world’s leading supercar manufacturers – companies like Koenigsegg and Aston Martin – choose to fill their cars with Castrol EDGE boosted with TITANIUM FST™ before they leave the factory. This is, after all, Castrol’s strongest and most advanced oil yet.
