Race Aventadors and Koenigseggs round Hong Kong in an expansive new game

Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown lets you unleash a symphony of horsepower upon Hong Kong, if you can keep it on the island

It’s fair to say Nacon’s Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown – the 21st instalment in the series – understands car culture like few games before it. Many other titles verge on being overwhelming, throwing new cars at you before you’ve even had a chance to get to grips with the last one to the point, so there really is something to be said for the slow burn.

As much as you’d love to drive every car out there, developers KT Racing know that a large part of what makes driving special is falling in love with a car over time and, crucially, the connections you make with other impassioned drivers along the way.

Time to head east

So, if a car is your brush, what’s your canvas? In this case, it’s Hong Kong. Better still, a 1:1 recreation of the island that’s full of surprises – it’s not all just skyscrapers and tarmac. There’s lush countryside, imposing mountains and hidden corners to be found.

And some of the most incredible roads connect them, making Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown a real driver’s dream. Especially when you can experience them all from behind the wheel of some of the world's most beautiful vehicles.

Get everywhere fast

One such car is the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, which is neither demure nor mindful, but rather bold, brash, and scarily fast.

If your paint job isn't loud enough, the V12 6.5 litre engine definitely will be. It can send you from 0 to 62mph in a mere 2.8 seconds, so while we’ve just waxed lyrical about the lovely scenery, it’ll mostly be a blur when you put your foot down.

If a Lamborghini isn’t quite fast enough for your taste, then maybe the one-time world speed record holder, the Koenigsegg Agera RS, will do the trick.

A top speed of 285mph makes this one spicy Swedish meatball indeed. Spicy and pricy, as you’ll need to cough up a handsome sum to purchase one. But even if buying it leaves you destitute, you can still engage in the selfless philanthropic pursuit of letting the 5.0 litre V8 roar for the denizens of Hong Kong.

Use some muscle

Sometimes though, you don’t need to be the fastest, but the biggest. A stalwart of the elite, the Mercedes-AMG G65 makes quite the impression. Be it a lustful gaze or disapproving looks, it matters not, because everyone will turn their necks to lay eyes on this beast.

Of course, you might associate the G-Wagen with carting the rich and famous around LA, but the AMG hasn’t forgotten this classic vehicle's utilitarian origins. It makes short work of the rugged twists and turns of the Hong Kong jungle paths.

Get competitive

This barely scratches the surface of what automotive delights Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown has to offer and no matter what opinions you have on each car, at its heart, this is a social game.

While there are races to compete in, you can also join a clan – the Sharps or the Streets – and make your mark, as you complete challenges and rise through the ranks.

There’s even more content planned down the road, too, with new events happening all the time and the iconic island of Ibiza making a return to Test Drive Unlimited as soon as December 11. Plus, KT Racing wants to introduce motorbikes down the road, if four wheels just don’t cut the mustard for you.

Better yet, you can get stuck in right now, as Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown is available to play on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
