JFK’s old Lincoln up for sale

Published: 15 Oct 2013

This is the car that ferried John F Kennedy around Texas in 1963. It's a white Lincoln Continental convertible, and it's coming up for sale.

It also carries with a sad, tragic fate, because - although it's not that JFK convertible - it's the one he rode in before he was assassinated in Dallas. It transported JFK, his wife and Texas governor John Connally from a breakfast and speech at the Hotel Texas ballroom on the morning of November 22 1963, through the streets of Fort Worth to Carswell Air Force Base. There, they boarded a plane set for Dallas. The rest, you already know.

After its brief hotride with the 35th President of the United States, the 1963 Continental was returned to Bill Golightly - who had loaned it for the President's use - before being sold to David Pelham, who in turn sold the car to a museum owner in 1967 for just $10 "and other valuable consideration". It remained in the museum's custody until 1998, where it was sold again at public auction.

It's been given the nickname ‘Limo-One', and is described as the last car to have safely transported JFK. RR Auctions tell us the Conti' has been restored by Lincoln specialist Baker Restoration, who replaced the engine and cleaned up the body and paintwork. The red leather interior though, has been left untouched, in its original condition.

Should you want it, click here for the listing. Bids start at $50,000. There's also a black, bulletproof Lincoln Continental saloon in the JFK auction too, used by the Kennedy White House motor pool.
